How to Stay Grounded When Everything Around You Feels Unstable
I recently came back from Hawaii after experiencing quite the lineup: Kīlauea volcano was erupting, a hurricane approaching, a tropical storm, a power outage and an earthquake.
Apparently, I signed up for the delux package.
As dramatic as all of this sounds, it reminded me of something we teach in the clairvoyant program all the time:
Can we stay steady no matter what is happening around us?
Protect Your Body AND Your Energy
When the hurricane was approaching the Big Island, the news was taken seriously.
So first, we prepared physically. Water, food, propane, medications, bringing things in from outside—the practical things you do to protect the body and make your surroundings as safe and comfortable as possible.
Taking care of yourself spiritually does not mean ignoring physical reality. Protect the body also.
Then I did what I know to do spiritually.
I grounded myself. I grounded the home where I was staying. I continued that grounding up to the mountain behind us.
And then I thought, why stop there? I grounded the whole island.
As I tuned in, I became aware of thousands of people across the Big Island praying, meditating and working energetically to help protect their homes, their communities and the land.
I found this incredibly moving. I was certainly not sitting there doing this alone. There was a whole network of people, each in their own way, putting their attention and intention toward the island and asking for protection and grace.
I said hello to the storm. Energetically, I heard that this was a cleanse and that it was necessary. I asked if we could please have as little damage to people and infrastructure as possible.
The storm eventually shifted farther south. The outer bands hit the east side of the island and there was damage from the rain, but nothing like what could have happened with a direct hit.
I cannot tell you that prayer or meditation changed the path of a hurricane. What I can tell you is that thousands of people focusing together on the well-being of their land and community is powerful to experience.
And perhaps that is part of our job during uncertain times: do the practical work to protect the body, then use our spiritual tools rather than simply sitting in fear.
Then came the earthquake.
There is something rather convincing about the ground underneath you suddenly moving!
Thankfully, it was small. Nothing fell down, and we went right on with our day. But after an earthquake, I like to change out my grounding cord. A bigger quake can be shattering to the body and your energy, and it can take some time to recalibrate.
Sometimes the Storm Is Another Person
These are extraordinary examples, but we can use the same tools in everyday life.
You can be having a perfectly lovely day, feeling happy and grounded, and walk into a room with someone who is angry, unhappy or frustrated.
And suddenly—there goes your lovely day.
Did you match their energy, and now you are unhappy too?
Did your energy go into their space because you are trying to change them so that you can feel better?
Sometimes your joy can even light up where another person is not yet able to have joy for themselves.
Does this mean you need to sit down for the next four hours and carefully explain why they are actually loved and should join you?
Possibly. But I have seen that work very rarely in my travels.
Instead, ask yourself:
Where is my energy?
We do not always need to jump into someone else's experience to help them. They are learning their own life lessons, just as we are learning ours.
You can have compassion for someone without giving them your energy or taking on theirs.
Protect the body. Protect your energy. Ground. Reset. And move on with your day.
A Quick Exercise to Ground and Protect Your Energy
The next time the world—or another person—knocks you off center:
Ground yourself. Create a fresh grounding cord from the base of the spine to the center of the earth and begin releasing other people's energy from your space.
Notice who comes to mind. As soon as you close your eyes, who are you thinking about? Your energy may be in their space, or theirs may be in yours.
Create a gold sun. Call your energy back from other people, work, your commute, yesterday's conversation, tomorrow's worries—wherever you have left it.
Fill yourself back up. Bring that gold sun down through your body and replenish your space with your own energy.
Ground your surroundings. Ground your home, room, office or car. If you are traveling, you can ground the space you are traveling in as well.
Move on with your day. You do not have to keep carrying the storm after it has passed.
Staying grounded does not mean nothing will ever shake you.
It means that when something does, you know how to come back to yourself.
Stay steady like a redwood tree while the world changes around you.
And remember—you have tools.
If you need some energetic support getting back to yourself, book a reading, or inquire about classes and clairvoyant training to learn how to use these tools for yourself.
